The emergence of the Economis prayer has an interesting legend. History has it that once a misfortune happened on Mount Athos in the monastery of St. Athanasius. Due to severe hunger, all the monks had to leave their monastery and, subsequently, the elder Athanasius decided to leave behind them.
However, he did not have time to retreat far, when the Virgin came out to meet him, who persuaded him to return to the Lavra. Her appearance was surprising because women were forbidden to climb the Holy Mountain. When asked about who she was, the woman introduced herself as the Lord Mother, the one who was worshiped in their sacred monastery.
In evidence, the Mother of God instructed the elder to hit the nearest stone with a staff. As soon as Athanasius fulfilled the decree, life-giving moisture poured out of the stone in a swift stream. The reverend turned around, but Virgo caught a trace.
He returned to the Lavra and was amazed - the bins were full of food. Soon, monks who had previously left the monks began to return to the Mountain. In memory of this miracle, the icon of the Mother of God “The Housewife” was written, which depicts the Mother of God with baby Jesus on her knees, and on either side of it are Athanasius of Athos and Mikhail Sinadsky, bowed in a deep bow.
Since then, to this day, there has been no housekeeper in the monastery of Lavra, only an assistant economist or sub-economist.
Akathist of the Mother of God of "Economics": instruction
Once a year on July 18, on the day of commemoration of the holy image of the Mother of God, in the Lavra of St. Athanasius, as well as in other churches and temples, a special prayer to the Theotokos “The Economics” is read. The church service consists of a whole akathist, who in turn includes:

The full version of the Ekonomisse prayer is read once a year on the day of veneration of Athanasius of Athos, since the history of the appearance of the icon and the prayer service of the Housekeeper is closely connected with the Saint and his Lavra.
