Types of Scarves
A beautifully draped or tied scarf on the shoulders is not just a stylish accessory, but a whole art. Before you learn its basics, you should familiarize yourself with the typology of scarves, which, as it turned out, are a huge number. This stage is important, since the exact method should be chosen for tying it depending on the material and type of accessory. The main types of woven or knitted stripes for wearing around the neck include the items listed below.
Classic scarf - a piece of woven fabric or a knitted rectangular-shaped model with a large length and small width (approximately 70x15 cm), wrapped around the neck several times, depending on the size.
Shawl- a piece of knitted or wool yarn that serves as a cloak on the shoulders. Shawls are usually available in large sizes (from 1 - 1.5 m or more) and have a square shape. It can be bent in half, and most often such an accessory is worn in the cold season.
Bactus- A newfangled model, which is a modified shawl. Bactus is distinguished by its smaller size and way of wearing: usually the accessory is tied to a knot at the back, releasing the angle forward on the neck to cover the chest.
Neckpiece- A wardrobe item that has survived several eras. It is a cape made of natural or artificial fur, which is thrown over the shoulders. Some models have elements that are suitable so that they can be tied to the neck, but this is rare.
Arafatka or Palestinian shawl, also called "keffiyeh." They began to call him Arafat in the mid-70s of the last century by the name of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, who constantly appeared in public with a keffiyeh on his head. Traditionally, a Palestinian shawl is used to be worn on the face as a protection against wind and sand, but over time the methods of tying the accessory have changed significantly. It is worn both on the neck and on the shoulders, tied to a hoop or released forward. Traditionally a male model, today the keffiyeh is in the wardrobe of women. The colors of the scarf usually have a black-and-white or red-white print; it is made of cotton itself.
Palantine- a classic model of a scarf with a width of 0.7 m, having a rectangular shape. A wide variety of materials are used to make the stole, including silk, cotton, chintz, wool and knitted fabric. The difference from the shawl is that the stole can be modeled and worn as a hat (an alternative to a winter hat).
Snud- a scarf collar or a scarf pipe with a rectangular configuration. The main feature of the snud is stitched edges, as a result of which it is not tied to the neck, but worn over the head. In some cases, snood is used as a decorative cape on the hair. Both woven and knitted snoods are equally popular.
You can also highlight other varieties of neck dressingswhich are often worn as a scarf.
Pareo- Women's large-sized scarf designed for tying under the armpits or wrapping around the hips. However, many ladies use a beach accessory as an option for a light shawl for cool weather in the warm season (spring, summer). Ways to wear a pareo also allow you to tie it around the back of the neck or wear it like a tippet.
Handkerchief- a square or triangular piece of fabric to be worn on the neck and head. National scarves are popular (for example, Pavlovsky Posad printed). Many models have brushes, the presence of which limits the options for tying a scarf (with many methods, they look ugly or, conversely, effectively complement the image).
Kerchief- a piece of fabric in the form of an isosceles triangle, tied on the head or neck. Materials for the manufacture of scarves are chintz, cotton, less often linen, wool or silk.
French scarf- a variety of scarves usual, different from the first more complex design. This is a transformer product that has two sides and a triangular shape, and at the end of one of the corners there is a loop through which you can output one of the two remaining corners, or two at once. Thanks to this, the French scarf has at least five dozen ways to tie around the neck. To tie the product was convenient, it is made of natural silk or viscose.
Kashne- traditionally a man’s neck scarf (cache-nez - “hide the nose”), intended for sheltering the lower part of the face. Today he firmly entered the women's wardrobe, and in many countries of the world muffler is an element of a military uniform.
Sling- strictly speaking, this is not quite a scarf, but an accessory made of fabric designed to carry children. Due to the large size and soft material of which the sling is made, it can be wrapped around the shoulders and waist, creating a comfortable space for the baby to sit so that it is as close to the mother as possible.
So, we decided on what kind of scarf this or that product available to you belongs. Next, we present five methods of the most popular and popular methods of knitting a scarf, suitable for most models.

There are several methods that allow you to beautifully tie it out.:

In some cases, you can try to perform a combination using snud.
A beautiful shawl or stole can be so tied to a coatthat they completely hide his flaws (if any). Here are some examples:
- The first way - throw a shawl on your shoulders, cross the two nearest ends in front, and fasten the opposite edges on your shoulders;
- The second way is to tie the two ends of a shawl or stole into a strong knot. From above, make several turns by wrapping the remaining fabric of the product around the knot clockwise.Get the original clamp;
- The third way - throw the stole or shawl over the neck and tie the two ends to get a long "rocker". Twist it, having made 1 - 2 turns, and throw the formed loop over the head so that it fits the neck.
Ways to tie a scarf around your neck
You can beautifully tie a scarf on top of your outer clothing so that it warms your neck and looks stylish with the rest of the details of your appearance, in several original ways. Each such technique has its own name, and below we give a description of them, starting from exactly how this or that method is called and what it implies.
The selected methods are the most popular - they are suitable for a classic rectangular scarf, square scarves and bactuses, stoles, neckerchiefs and scarves:
- Technics "Loop chain"- fold a long scarf in half and put it on your neck. At one end you have a loop: insert 2 free ends into it, twist the loop once around its axis, and once again extend the ends of the product into a new loop formed with a smaller radius. This method is best suited for plain scarves with a smooth fabric texture;
- Technics "Bow-Rosette" - For her, a long dense scarf or a thin cotton scarf is used. Silk glides too much, therefore it is not suitable for this technique. Making a figure is very simple: tie a bow in front of the neck, and try to make another bow of a smaller size on top of it. It should be a kind of outlet. To give the figure a finished look, straighten the tips;
- Technics "Harness on the neck" - you need a long scarf or muffler made of non-smooth material. Spinning the fabric in the air, like dough, twist the scarf into a bundle, making circular movements around its axis. The resulting tourniquet wraps around the neck. Further, it is drawn up in exactly the same way as described in the paragraph “Loop chain”;
- Technics "Casablanca" - put the product on the neck in front, crossing the ends at the back of the head. The scarf should fit around the neck in one layer. Then bring the ends forward and tie with a regular knot. This is the easiest way to make a scarf;
- Technics "Thumbelina" - An original technique, which implies a combination of several long thin scarves in harmony with colors and prints. Tie the ends of all the scarves into one knot and weave a braid from the long ends. Fix the second end and wrap the braid around the neck using the techniques of "Harness", "Casablanca" or "Loop chain";
- Technics "Wicker loop" - to implement the technique you will need a shawl or stole. Roll up the product with a sausage / tourniquet and fold in half. Wind the tourniquet around the neck so that a loop forms on the chest. Release one end of the tourniquet through the bottom of the loop, and thread the other over it.
The described techniques and even more other interesting techniques for tying a scarf around the neck are presented in the video attached below.
Ways to wear a scarf with a clip (clutch)
Often the young ladies complain that it is not easy for them to cope with tying a scarf, since the figure made does not keep its shape and constantly blossoms. To solve such a problem special accessories are used - shawls or couplings, pins and brooches, as well as consisting of two separate halves magnetic clamps. Such an element allows you to create the most complex designs using scarves, scarves, stoles, shawls, pareos and scarves.
We offer to master several basic and sophisticated techniques:
- The first method is suitable for square-shaped products. Fold the product in half to make a triangle. Throw it over your neck and adjust so that both ends are at the same level. Pass the tips into the clip and lock it at the height you need. In appearance it should turn out a “pioneer tie”, where a clip acts as a knot;
- The second method - first, a square scarf is tied exactly as described in the first method. The difference lies in the fact that the place of attachment of the clip is shifted to one of the shoulders, and the corresponding end of the scarf is straightened behind the back, at the level of the scapula.As a result, the breast is favorably emphasized due to the obtained shape of the product;
- The third method is similar to the first two techniques, however, a clip or a special pin is attached to the shoulder, and both ends of the scarf remain in front, where they are beautifully spread on the chest, or tied again with a knot.
More sophisticated methods for tying a scarf with clamping accessories can be like this:
- Method number 1 - suitable for square, woolen, cotton and silk scarves. Throw a double-folded scarf around your neck so that both ends hang down the front at the same length. Twist the ends of the product around its axis 3-4 times in the direction from top to bottom. Tie them in one knot - it should be located in the middle of the chest. Hide the binding site with a large clip or brooch;
- Method number 2 - ideal for square silk stoles and scarfs-shawls. Throw the product over your shoulders, releasing the ends on your hands. In the middle of the chest, fasten both sides with a clip. Leave the hanging ends in the same position or twist into a bundle at a level below the place where the clip is installed;
- Method number 3 - the following technique is suitable for triangular scarves or thin scarves that can be folded diagonally, getting a triangular shape. Throw the product around the neck so that it is positioned asymmetrically, covering one shoulder with a wide part, and the other with free ends. Release the ends of the scarf through the clamping ring and pull the mounting accessory closer to the neck.
How to wear Snood?
The Snood model is extremely comfortable to wear. The secret is that almost any long rectangular scarf can be turned into a snood if you connect the two ends into one knot. However, if you have at your disposal a classic model of snood, it is most convenient to tie it in double loop. To do this, make a figure of eight from a scarf and put both loops around your neck. The number of revolutions depends on the length of the snout: if desired, you can make 2 - 3 turns around the neck, or pull one of the loops obtained on the head, which perfectly replaces the winter hat.
The snood-style double-loop technique can also be performed for a regular long scarf, as mentioned earlier.
How to tie a headband?
If the scarf is long enough, made of soft supple fabric that holds its shape well and looks stylish, it can be tied beautifully on the head. Also, such a technique is suitable for those who want to wear only one warm accessory, without a headdress. Scarves-stoles and square scarves are best suited for such purposes, but you can try to simulate the desired configuration with the help of a scarf.
To build simple headbandTake a square scarf and fold it diagonally. Throw the product over your head, place the ends exactly on the sides and slightly twist them in circular motions into bundles. Get the obtained harnesses behind the head and knot up. If the scarf is large and long, the bundles can be lowered down and wrapped around the neck. The result is an elegant and very warm design.
